Only in fashion can you throw an event on a Wednesday and call it “weekend” without anybody questioning it…
So last weekend (hum, Wednesday), I went to the Knack/Le Vif Fashion Weekend 2010 catwalk in Tour & Taxi. The event which is in it’s seven year, has been consecutively bringing young graduates into the limelight.
Selected among the best European design schools (La Cambre, Antwerp Academy, Central St Martins, ArtEZ and IFM) the eleven contestants had to show their graduate collection on the catwalk at the end of which, “a” winner would be selected to cash the ten thousands euros prize…
Turned out the members of the jury (Nathalie Rykiel, Natalia Brilli, Raf Vandersmissen, Franck Pairon, Sandrina Fasoli and Michael Marson) couldn’t make up their minds and decided to pick two winners…
Matthew Harding, who was one of my favorite, and Lea Peckre.
After mingling with the guest and talking to a few familiar faces I decided to go backstage. Going backstage at a fashion show is like going in the kitchen of a famous restaurant… That’s where the magic happens!
Between the models waiting to have their make done and the designers getting their outfits ready, the atmosphere was quite relaxed… For now. It’s the calm before the storm…
Then in a split second it becomes chaotic… Models are called to get dressed and the fitting room get filled in no time. You can feel the stress level increasing and if you have no reason to be there (like myself), you better not stand in the way and find a safe place to hide…

But it’s ok as it doesn’t last long. As soon as all the models are ready, the tension drops and the fun comes back!
My other fav’ was Nathalie Fordeyn (above and below). I though that her collection was the strongest visually.
Overall I was really impressed by the level and the quality of the designs. As a designer myself I know it is not always easy to create a visually strong and homogeneous collection that can be both original and wearable…. So, well done to all of them and I am looking forward to the next edition of the fashion “weekend”.
What better way to illustrate the saying “after the calm comes the storm” than with this two pictures, the first one being taken before the show and the second one just moment after…
And what did I learned from this soirée?
Video of the show coming very soon!
