Feather Flower Headband DIY

Today I wanted to propose you something new… A DIY! It’s about time I introduced a tutorial into my blog as crafting & sewing is really part of my daily job. The truth is that as most of the things I do are quite complicate for the non professional (wedding dress DIY anyone? 😉 I was waiting for the perfect introduction… You know, something easy but with a professional look. In the end I opted for the feather flower headband!I hope you will like it!

The headband can be done in any color depending on how you want to wear it, white flowers are perfect for a wedding (in fact, a lot of my brides ask me to do them) whereas colorful flowers can be worn for any occasion! Plus, this DIY can also be fun to do with children.

Ok, Let’s get started!!

[WHAT YOU WILL YOU NEED?]

• Feathers in a pack: You should be able to find them in any art & craft store. I got mine from Schleiper in Brussels.
• Beads: I used the 4mm Gutermann Renaissance beads
• Crystals: 5mm Gutermann Crystal beads
• A lace ribbon of approximately 100 cm long and 2.5cm wide (can vary according to your head size)
• White vinyl glue: I got it as well from Schleiper
• A pair of scissors
• A thread bobbin preferably the same color as your feathers
• A little piece of fabric the same color as your feathers.
• A needle

[STEP 1]

Cut a little square of fabric the same size of your ribbon. For example, if your ribbon is 2.5 cm wide, cut a little square of 2.5cm per 2.5 cm. Once it’s done, as usually the feathers come in various size, select the bigger/larger ones to start your flower. Dip the tip of each feather in the glue, then place them on the fabric square, one by one. Make sure that the tip of each feather lies in the center without overlapping the others. Don’t be scared if you put too much glue as the main characteristic of the vinyl glue is that it dries transparent.

When you finish with your first circle of feathers, start again using this time the medium sized. Glue them in between the previous set. Now start your third layer of feathers with the smallest ones doing the exact same thing.

[STEP 2]

When you are happy with the shape of your flower, let it dry a few hours, or as I did, until the next day. Once dry, the glue should be hard and transparent. If you feel as some feathers are not glued properly, add some more and wait again.

[STEP 3]

Now it’s time to decorate your flower! Using your pair of tweezers, place the beads and crystals at the center of the flower until you get the desired effect. I personally used more crystal than beads and placed them asymmetrically to get a natural look.

Once you figured out how many beads and crystal you’ll need to use, put them aside and start sewing them one by one. This step might be a little more difficult as the glue is now hard, but it is important that you get through all the layers.

If you’re doing this tutorial with children, you can simplify this step by gluing the beads instead of sewing them.

[STEP 4]

We are almost done..! Once you’ve finished, turn your flower upside down and place the center of your ribbon on the back of the flower. You should align it with your little square of fabric. Then hand stitch your ribbon to the fabric, making sure it’s sewn all around. Once it’s done, you’re done!! I hope your flower will come out nicely!
